    AmberCon NW 2009
Here's what I'm running this year:

Sea Dracula. It'll be in an evening slot, probably Friday evening. Game will start an hour late to give all the players a chance to hit the bar first. (It'll help, trust me.)

The Kolvir Prince, an adaptation of The Mountain Witch. This'll be a long game, probably taking both the Friday morning and the Friday afternoon slots.

If the con is still hurting for games, I might run a slot of InSpectres. It would probably conflict with the games I want to play, though.

For you "Friday Morning Board and Card Game" fans, never fear; I hear that Jason is picking up the slack.

What Will Pjack Be Doing On His Summer Vacation?
Q: What will Pjack be doing summer term? (Aside from going to school full-time?)

A: He'll be designing outdoor geological maps for blind kids.

This summer is going to be crazy cool.

    Extra Credit Question
Extra credit question on my Geography midterm yesterday:

"Name the organism that fixes atmospheric nitrogen into the soil."

    My answer:

    "Steve."

    ...

To be fair: They did ask me to name it.

Welcome To Qwest! Please Bend Over!
Short version: [info]karjack and myself are without internet until this evening. (I'm at a school computer.)

Long version: We switched to Qwest as our ISP, effective today. We'd rather have kept EFN, but Qwest is cheaper... and right now, cheaper is better.

A Qwest representative told me that they would activate the service at 5 pm. All well and good. What they didn't tell me was that they would make the switch at 6 am, giving us a full business day without internet.

    @%##@@*!*!!

OK, fine; I'm sure there are plenty of technical reasons why they need 11 hours to get us hooked up. Paperwork, bureaucracy, not enough staff, etc. But tell us that we'll be without internet for the entire day!

If all goes well, we'll have internet later today. If it doesn't, then I get to play with Qwest tech support. I'm not holding my breath. For our first day of "service", I'm not terribly impressed.

    Free Man
Patrick McGoohan has passed away, at the age of 80. BBC News obit here.

The Prisoner had a profound impact on teenage-me. Before The Prisoner, I'd never seen anything made before my lifetime that I found in the least bit engaging or compelling. For me, any media made before Star Wars was completely uninteresting.

The Prisoner changed that. I'd had no idea that a show so engrossing, creative, and weird even existed... and it was already over 20 years old by the time I first saw it. It showed me that there was more to culture than late 1980s TV. (I'm still surprised when I discover something awesome that came out of the late 1960s, and I should know better by now!)

And it was mine. I'd found something unique and special that no-one at my school had even heard of. The Prisoner became part of my identity, in an important way. And then I got to introduce it to my friends, and that was awesome, too.

Even in 1989, 20 years after it was made, it was worth watching. Now, over 40 years later, it's still worth watching.

    Rest in peace, No. Six.
