Free Man
Patrick McGoohan has passed away, at the age of 80. BBC News obit here.
The Prisoner had a profound impact on teenage-me. Before The Prisoner, I'd never seen anything made before my lifetime that I found in the least bit engaging or compelling. For me, any media made before Star Wars was completely uninteresting.
The Prisoner changed that. I'd had no idea that a show so engrossing, creative, and weird even existed... and it was already over 20 years old by the time I first saw it. It showed me that there was more to culture than late 1980s TV. (I'm still surprised when I discover something awesome that came out of the late 1960s, and I should know better by now!)
And it was mine. I'd found something unique and special that no-one at my school had even heard of. The Prisoner became part of my identity, in an important way. And then I got to introduce it to my friends, and that was awesome, too.
Even in 1989, 20 years after it was made, it was worth watching. Now, over 40 years later, it's still worth watching.
Rest in peace, No. Six.
