Extra Credit Question
Extra credit question on my Geography midterm yesterday:

"Name the organism that fixes atmospheric nitrogen into the soil."

My answer:

"Steve."

...

To be fair: They did ask me to name it.

Man, it's been too long since I've seen that movie.

Probably would have lost some of it's power if Bastian had named her "Steve", though.

To be perfectly honest, what with all the storm FX and Barrett Oliver just screaming it, I had no idea what he actually said until years later (and the Internet).

Now I'm picturing Steve the Wraith from Stargate Atlantis, merrily fixing nitrogen in the soil of earth o.O

I do love how your brain works.
Do you know what answer the professor was looking for? I don't.

I used to know, but forgot. One visit to Wikipedia later:

"Rhizobia are soil bacteria that fix nitrogen (diazotrophy) after becoming established inside root nodules of legumes (Fabaceae)."

Although I suppose that now I'll have to edit that Wikipedia article to input the organism's new taxonomy. :)

That made me laugh. Especially so since I read it same day as I read a bunch of other weird student things (of course I can't find the url anymore but http://www.bored-todeath.com/?p=913 seems to have a few similar papers to what I was reading.)
