"Dirty Worlds" Seminar at Neoncon 2009
With special guest, Jess Heinig! Jess is brilliant. He's one of my favorite game designers--and one of my favorite people. It was a pleasure to have Jess there with me. He raises conversations to a different level. Enjoy! (The sound is inconsistent at first, but cleans up after 7 minutes or so.) By the way, check out Dying Kingdoms! |

Moon Wiring Club: INFORMATION SERVICES I love Moon Wiring Club. And not just because I got their new record this weekend, which I am going to play tonight because I’ve been sick and/or unconscious with some weird bug since Friday morning. Oh no. (What if it cured me?) No, I love them because they do things like this, too:
In 1982, Gelographic RadioTelevision co-broadcast a test transmission for the tentative BBC5 channel.
Although the station idents were deemed a massive success, sadly the only known survivors of this viewing were unable to be traced, due to radiation issues. This archive footage has been recently unearthed, and provides a tempting glimpse into what those who watched through the smoked glass were able to see.
The musical accompaniment, acclaimed in some quarters, features on the new Moon Wiring Club album ’Striped Paint for the Last Post’, due ’sometime’ November. Certainly before the feast of Syllabub in any case.
Remember: confusing electronic music is a great British tradition.

- Help Phoenix Marie
"We are raising funds to get urgently needed medical treatment for our beloved friend, Phoenix Marie. She has been battling a life-threatening progressive heart valve disease since 2006, when she had her first heart failure and near death experience. With no insurance to cover her, Phoenix sold almost all of her valuable belongings and clothing and did eBay sales for half a year in order to see a specialist and receive the tests and costly x-rays needed to diagnose her condition. Her heart disease was a congenital defect (from birth) that was apparently misdiagnosed in childhood as harmless and left unchecked…" (tags:people )

cartoon titlem, cartoon sold
I'm narrowing down potential titles for my ACT-I-VATE gag strip. My favorite is Gag Reflex despite the obvious drawbacks. I want to stay away from the idea that it's a 'rejected' cartoon - not because that bothers me but because It's a cartoon that is about something. Putting the focus on what the fact that it didn't run in the New Yorker doesn't really represent the content of the cartoon. It also needs to be memorable and easy to say. I like the alliteration of Ipecac Comics and the weird pun of Nihilarity. Horse Latitudes might be too obscure and make people think it's a cartoon about horses. I don't know. Easy to over think this but at the same time it's a title that I'll have to live with for, at least, a couple years, and maybe longer. Poll #1485882
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 51 what's a good gag cartoon strip title? I sold another cartoon to the New Yorker last week. It's been a pretty steady stream of sales. It makes me really happy. I'm lucky and privileged. Current Music: #393: Infidelity - Chicago Public Radio |

My husband amuses me.
Ogre's in the shower, and I just heard him saying "No" repeatedly in a very silly British accent. I'm not entirely sure what's going on in there, but I'm sure it's entertaining. The Kitten is chasing something rattly around the floor. I'm almost afraid to look. |

Oh dear Lord.
Memo: Me Dear Me, You are not in your early 20s anymore, and throwing yourself around the dancefloor to "Beers, Steers and Queers" or "Fuck it up, Pigface" is no longer in your best interest. Your knees are about ready take out a contract on the stupid addled brain who thinks they can still handle it. Also, your calf muscles would like to have a conversation about these cramps. No Love, Your Body All told, it was an excellent night. Oh, do my knees ache today. Amy introduced me to this drink made with cherry vodka that tastes almost exactly like Hawiian Punch, and in the immortal words of the FABULOUS bartender, "When you make it with the Cherry vodka, it has WAY less calories." And, as Amy pointed out, no High Fructose Corn Syrup. Flavored boozes for the win! Granted, he also tossed about four maraschino cherries in there, so that kind of defeated the gain there. But, hey. They were YUMMY. Much love to Kate the Red for chauffering my drunk ass up to Greenwood to meet up with Ogre and Julz at their "Times Up" game. Also, for feeding me Dicks. (Seattle people get that.) Saw lots of people I hadn't seen in ages including DJ_Wudi, Bob, Little Dave, just loads of people. Lots of dancing and laughing and one seriously cute boy in the most awesome outfit who I was too tongue tied to actually talk to, though he seemed nice. And a very sweet guy who liked my tattoos. Oh, the aching. Need to hop in the shower. I used an assload of product on my hair last night to keep it slicked back and it's really... unfortunate this morning. Current Mood: sore |

Batching http://grubbstreet.blogspot.com/2009/11/batching.html OK, truth to be told, I have been living a single man's life for the past two weeks and change. No, nothing's wrong. The Lovely Bride took her mom to Greece for a long-anticipated tour. Nardi (short for Leonarda) has been wanting to visit Greece forever, and as she's had more problems with her hips in recent years, this might to be the last chance. So the two of them went on a church-sponsored tour titled "In the Footsteps of St. Paul". Given that the LB is pretty militantly ex-Catholic, it promised to be an interesting sojourn. But more on that later, perhaps. What we're talking about is, of of course, me. I find I like solitude, in general, and it takes a couple days of no human contact before I start roaming the house looking for things to do. I picked up the other half of the house duties (laundry, dishes) without too much pain or unnecessary adventure. I did my own cooking, which resulted in me eating less in the evenings (since the beginning of October, I've lost 15 pounds, but most of that was due to a three-day bout with food poisoning). On the other hand, I was nowhere as culinarily active I wanted to be - I never made bread (which I often do when I'm bored), nor tried any new recipes. By the same token, I avoided breaking out the mac and cheese, so I guess that's a victory. Oh, and I made omelets, which I never do when the LB is in the house (allergies). My greatest challenge was dealing with the Lovely Bride's Fortress of Technology - otherwise known are the downstairs TV, where she records a lot of SciFi (sorry, Syfy) and crime shows. She has two separate VCRs hooked up that needed tapes changed at particular times, along with the fact that Comcast, in upgrading the system, has added some additional bells and whistles into the system. Oh, and right after she left, we had the time change from Daylight Savings. End result was about seven little yellow sticky notes with copious instructions on how to handle various situations. If all goes well, she gets her shows. If not, we will never speak of this again. Also in a big pending pile is the mail. I separated it into four piles - Bills (which I paid in her absence), Bills and important stuff (due after her return), unimportant mail that MAY be important, and catalogs. Yeah, she's going to have fun. On the lawn, I was spared any major personal effort by the fact it has rained almost every day since she left. I did manage to take down the dead and rotting tomato plants she had, pulling the last of the viable crop. Severed those up in the omelets. The cats of course, viewed me suspiciously for the first three days, as if I were some invader in their quiet lives of following the LB from room to room throughout the day. By the end of the fourth day, Harley decided to switch allegiances and become my new BFF, following me everywhere, in hopes that I would suddenly go mad and feed her again. Victoria remained cool and imperious, condoning to sit on my lap only in the past few days. Of course, when the LB returns, they will go running back to her. Traitors. All in all, I think I can survive being on my own, but its not nearly as much fun (The Lovely Bride, reporting from Greece, wishes I was there, since she could drag ME into climbing various Greek peaks and finding restaurants down dimly-lit alleys). I was ill this week, knocked out with what I think was a flu bug - temperature of 101. And that was no fun at all to facing alone. But, the LB returns tomorrow, and life returns to what approximates normal around here. But for the moment, I haven't destroyed too much, and still know I can shift for myself, if I have to. More later, |

Apple Files Patent On Evil Apple has filed for patent on a technology they call an "enforcement routine," that’ll display ads on pretty much any device with a screen and demand that you view them — or else you don’t get your device back:
Its distinctive feature is a design that doesn’t simply invite a user to pay attention to an ad — it also compels attention. The technology can freeze the device until the user clicks a button or answers a test question to demonstrate that he or she has dutifully noticed the commercial message. Because this technology would be embedded in the innermost core of the device, the ads could appear on the screen at any time, no matter what one is doing.

More WindyCon
The concert yesterday afternoon went pretty darn well, I thought. Just before that, I caught the first half of Luke Ski's, and he was in fine form and having fun. After, I hung out in the hall for awhile, talking to many nice people (including Bob Passavoy, who I never see enough of). Then I went back up to the room for awhile. I'd got it into my head that the Masquerade was at 9:00. Well, at 8:20 I was getting ready to go down, and I looked at the program book to see where it was, and discovered that it was at 8:00. I was downstairs by 8:25. Got backstage literally three minutes before I had to go on. Fortunately, it was before, so I got up there smoothly and got right into it... as it was announced that the masquerade winners would be announced after 9:45. So I'm suddenly committed to an hour and fifteen. Noooooooo problem. Rocked the house. I've done almost four hours of concert this weekend, with only two repeats ("Two Guys Kissin'" and "Rocket Ride"). Then I went to the open filk for a bit. Bill Roper, Kiki, Matt, others. Some guy noodling very well with a banjo. A new kid, Ray I'm pretty sure his name was, wrote a song yesterday morning, and he's got a very soft voice but the song was good and his guitaring is also good. Another new person, a young girl about the same age, did a couple of songs I presume are some kind of alternative folk-rock. Nice voice, good stuff. Today: packing up, hanging out by the dealers' room for awhile, Closing Ceremonies, home. How's by you? |

I get unaccountably annoyed when people use the phrase "..., who just happens to be [race], ..." I realize that this is just a dialectical feature of coastal white American English, which is meant to convey "race isn't important to me, but I feel a need to note it anyway." It's a set phrase, and I shouldn't try to parse it for grammatical meaning, like another sentence. But I do, and thus it annoys me. Does anyone "just happen" to be their race? Did it "just happen" to them? Like they were walking around, happily white just like everyone else, and they tripped and fell in a puddle of Chinese? Seriously? That happens? Because most of the people I know get their race from their biological parents, anything but accidentally. |

WindyCon So Far
Just getting ready to go downstairs. I've had a bad headache all morning, and I just had a burger, which helps. But not as much as the ibuprofen. The set last night was incredible. If today's 3:00 is anywhere as good, I'll blow out the walls. Eric and Jason of Toyboat did join me on stage for "PQR", and Amy McNally and I got a standing O for "Dervish", and Eric played drums again for "Rocket Ride". Gooooooood noise. How's your weekend progressing? |

Texas Wisdom #69 http://dreamcafe.com/words/2009/11/14/texas-wisdom-69/ http://dreamcafe.com/words/?p=790 One day Chipmonk Joe and Billy-Bob Gautama were sitting around talking. The subject of Wasted Willie Borgess came up. Joe said, “He’s a fucking asshole.” “Now Chip,” said Billy-Bob, “that’s no way to talk. You talk about someone like that, the only harm it does is to you.” “Okay, Goat,” said Joe, “what do YOU think of him?” “Oh, me?” said Billy-Bob. “Why, I think he’s a fucking asshole, bless his heart.”
